Storm Eunice: Experts reveal where storm got its name and what next one will be called

Following closely after Storm Dudley earlier in the week, Storm Eunice is the sixth named storm of the season.

The storm, which has dumped sleet, snow, and rain on Glasgow, was given its name by the Met Office on February 14.

Eunice is more commonly a girl's name, and its usage can be traced back to both the bible and Greek mythology, as reported by Hull Live.

According to the New Testament, Eunice was the mother of Timothy, while in Greek mythology Eunice was the wife of King Tiberius.

A more contemporary famous Eunice was Eunice Kennedy Shriver — sister of United States president John F. Kennedy — who founded the Special Olympics.

Eunice Kathleen Waymon is another iconic Eunice, though she is known better by the name Nina Simone.

The first named storm of the season was Storm Arwen, which was given its name on November 25, 2021.

First launched in 2015, the new storms list for each year usually begins at the start of September and ends at the end of August the following year.

The public are able to pitch names to the Met Office for future storms by getting in touch with the weather service via email at nameourstorms@metoffice.gov.uk.

Storms are officially given a name once they are deemed to have the potential to cause an amber or red warning.

A list of possible names are compiled by Irish forecaster Met Eireann, the UK’s Met Office, and the Dutch national weather forecasting service KNMI.

Naming storms is seen as a way of improving the communication of upcoming severe weather through the media and government agencies, the Met Office said.

The forecaster added: “In this way the public will be better placed to keep themselves, their property and businesses safe.”

The next storm is due to be named Franklin, followed by Gladys.
