Storm-Chaser Roofers Are Knocking Again: The One Line in Their Contract That Signs Away Your Insurance Check

Roofer
A roofing contractor often speaks with a homeowner after severe weather. Before signing, homeowners should look for Assignment of Benefits or other language that could transfer control over insurance claim payments. (Pexels).

A hailstorm rolls through, shingles scatter across the lawn, and within days someone is knocking at your door offering a “free” roof inspection. Storm-chaser roofers often move quickly after damaging weather, when homeowners are worried about leaks and eager to start an insurance claim.

Many legitimate roofing companies also solicit storm-damaged neighborhoods, so a door knock alone does not signal a scam. The real danger may be buried in the paperwork, especially language that gives a contractor rights to insurance benefits or control over claim payments. Before signing anything, homeowners need to understand exactly who will control the money.
