A man has been killed by a falling tree and hundreds of thousands of homes have been left without power as Storm Boelo battered the country with gusts reaching 84mph.
A Met Office amber weather warning for wind remains in place for Scotland and much of northern England until 9pm, having been activated at 9pm on Saturday, hours after the first named storm of the season – Storm Austen – petered out from the south west. Boelo brings a danger to life from flying debris and crashing waves and people should stay indoors as much as possible, the forecaster said.
