Stores Are Shrinking Loyalty Rewards, But Here Are 5 Hacks to Keep You Saving

If it feels like your grocery points aren’t going as far as they used to, you are not imagining it. In 2026, “loyalty shrinkflation” is a real trend. Grocery chains are quietly devaluing their points systems, requiring higher spending thresholds to unlock rewards and expiring points faster than before. The “free” perks are becoming harder to earn. However, the system is not entirely broken. By adjusting your strategy, you can optimize these tighter programs and still extract significant value from every trip.

1. The Gift Card Multiplier Strategy

The fastest way to earn points is rarely by buying groceries; it is by buying gift cards. Stores like Kroger and Safeway frequently run “4X Points” events on third-party gift cards. If you plan to spend $100 at Home Depot, Amazon, or a restaurant, buy a gift card for that store at the grocery store first. During a multiplier event, that $100 purchase earns you 400 points instantly—often enough for significant fuel savings—without buying a single extra grocery item.

2. The “Digital Stack”

Most loyalty programs operate on a pre-coupon total, but some have shifted to post-coupon. The hack is to know the order of operations. Always load your high-value digital coupons before you scan your loyalty card. Additionally, use third-party receipt scanning apps like Fetch or Ibotta. These operate outside the store’s loyalty ecosystem. By earning store points and third-party cash back on the same receipt, you effectively create your own “double point” system that the store cannot devalue.

3. Pharmacy Transfer Bonuses

One of the most lucrative “hidden” rewards is the pharmacy transfer. Grocery chains are desperate for your prescription business. They often offer massive point bonuses—sometimes equivalent to $25 or $50 in groceries—just for transferring a prescription to their pharmacy. If you have a recurring medication, you can cycle it between different grocery pharmacies every few months to continually harvest these transfer bonuses.

4. The “Friday” Discipline

Many stores concentrate their best point multipliers on specific days, often Fridays. Shopping on a Tuesday might earn you 1X points, while buying the same cart on a Friday could earn you 2X or 4X points with a digital coupon. The hack is simply discipline. Build your cart all week, but do not check out until the multiplier is active. Shifting your shopping day can double your rewards yield with zero extra spending.

5. Engaging with “Gamified” Challenges

Apps are increasingly using “challenges” to dole out points (e.g., “Buy produce three weeks in a row to earn 500 bonus points”). These offers must be manually activated. Most shoppers ignore them. By taking ten seconds to click “Start Challenge” in the app, you can unlock tiers of points that are invisible to the passive shopper. It is free money for habits you likely already have.

Beating the Devaluation

The key to winning in 2026 is active participation. The passive loyalty of simply scanning a card is no longer enough. By utilizing these hacks to boost your earnings, you can outpace the devaluation and maintain a stable grocery budget.
