Stoke City left-back Josh Tymon profiled amid Leeds United links

Leeds United are reportedly ‘weighing up’ a move for Stoke City left-back Josh Tymon. Jesse Marsch runs the risk of heading into the new season short of options at left-back after Junior Firpo was ruled out for up to eight weeks with injury.

Leif Davis, who spent the previous campaign on loan in the Championship with AFC Bournemouth, is currently the Whites’ only senior left-back available for selection.

Rangers are also interested in the 23-year-old, who played in all but two of Stoke’s 46 Championship matches last term. Tymon is contracted to the Potters until 2025 and Stoke boss Michael O’Neill has previously tipped him to play at the highest level.

“Aesthetically he’s probably at the peak of where we are as a squad,” O’Neill told our sister publication Stoke on Trent Live in February. “He has all the attributes you need to play at the top level and he’s developing his game all the time.

“His decision making is getting better, his final ball is getting better. What he has to do now as a more natural left-back is development defensively as well and I think he’s doing well at that.”

Tymon has experience playing at left-back and left-wing back and has played in the top-flight with the Potters, Hull City and Portuguese side Famalicao.

He joined Hull’s youth set-up in 2011 and made his professional debut in the FA Cup during a 3-1 victory at Bury in January 2016. He also featured for the Tigers in all but one of their matches en route to the EFL Cup semi-finals in 2016-17, a run which ended in defeat over two legs against eventual champions Manchester United.

Tymon played five times for Hull in the Premier League, including in a goalless draw against Manchester United at Old Trafford and a 2-0 home win over Liverpool in 2017. He rejected professional terms with the Tigers in 2017 and joined Stoke on a free transfer following his departure from the MKM Stadium.

The former England U20 international, who won the Toulon Tournament in 2017, initially struggled for game time at the Bet365 Stadium. He played three times during Stoke’s 2017-18 relegation season, before going out on loan to League One outfit MK Dons for the remainder of the campaign.

Upon his return to the Potters, Tymon was overlooked by both Gary Rowett and Nathan Jones and spent the majority of the season with the U23 side. He gained further top-flight experience with newly-promoted Famalicao for the first half of the following campaign and returned to fight for his place in the Potters’ squad.

His breakthrough year came during O’Neill’s first full season at the helm, but Tymon transformed into one of the first names on the team sheet last term. He won the Championship goal of the month award in August 2021 and was a contender for the club's player of the season award, which subsequently was handed to Jacob Brown.
