Stirling Albion stalwart defender praises teammates for gritty point after admitting mistake

Ross McGeachie held his hands up for the mistake that gifted Albion Rovers their opener on Saturday – but hailed his Stirling Albion team-mates for digging in and securing a valuable point on the road.

The Binos stand-in skipper was left disappointed at his involvement in Charlie Reilly’s opener for Rovers and said it typified a first half where Albion were well off the pace as their unbeaten run looked in serious jeopardy at Cliftonhill.

But Albion showed their character to overcome their poor display in the opening half – as well as a second-half red card to Robert Thomson – to snatch a late leveller through the prolific Dale Carrick, with the ex-Hearts forward then denied by the bar in stoppage time.

The 28-year-old defender’s decade at the club has earned him a testimonial and he hopes picking up hard-earned points like on Saturday can fire the Binos to success and make a special season even sweeter.

He said: “It was a disappointing first half, to be honest, from the standards we’ve set throughout the season.

“The goal, personally, wasn’t good enough from me and it gifted them a goal.

“We never really started the first half at all and even in the second half, although we were a bit better. We actually played better when we went down to ten men and you see that in football sometimes, it can go one way or the other.

“It could be a good, important point come the end of the season. There’s a long way to go yet so we’re not getting carried away with positioning in the table but we know we want to be up that end.”

McGeachie also hailed the form of Carrick, who took his tally in the league to ten for the season – sitting him just two behind the leader, Kane Hester of Elgin City.

The draw means that the Binos drop back into second behind Dumbarton, but keeps their unbeaten run intact ahead of the visit of Annan tomorrow.

The two sides met earlier this season, with the Binos coming back from the concession of a third-minute goal to claim the points at Galabank.

He added: “The only positive from the afternoon was that we managed to get a point out of it – it was a good ball in from Kai and a good finish from Dale, he’s doing really well right now.

“There was plenty of character shown to make sure we dug in and grind it out, it’s something we’ve made a wee bit of a habit of recently.

“It’s not going to be pretty every week, you’ve just got to stick in and get as many points as you can.”
