Stirling Albion boss Darren Young calls for side to be ruthless after Albion Rovers draw

Stirling Albion manager Darren Young was again left frustrated after his side were held to a 1-1 draw by Albion Rovers at Forthbank on Saturday.

Kyle Banner headed the Binos in front from a Kai Fotheringham corner early in the second half but a mistake by Adam Cummins allowed Charie Reilly to grab the equaliser eight minutes later.

They missed several good chances to win the game but were also grateful to skipper Paul McLean for a last minute interception when Reilly got clear of the defence, but the skipper did well to recover ground and his challenge forced the former Partick Thistle man to miss the target.

Next up is a trip to Station Park to play Forfar Athletic on Saturday with Gary Irvine’s men having slipped to the foot of the early cinch League 2 table after losing 2-1 to Annan Athletic at Galabank.

The Loons were runners-up to runaway champions Kelty Hearts last season before losing to Annan in the play-offs but Albion had a good record across the four meetings, losing just once. They triumphed 1-0 on their last visit to Station Park in March thanks to a goal from Akeel Francis.

It’s been a mixed bag of a campaign so far for Stirling, with two wins, two draws and two defeats - one of which was a 1-0 reverse at Bonnyrigg in their last away outing.

Young will hope they can get back to winning ways in the upcoming games with Forfar on Saturday and at home to Stranraer on September 17, with no fixture on September 24 due to the early exit to Highland League leaders Brechin City in the SPFL Trust Trophy.

On the 1-1 draw with Albion Rovers, the Binos boss said: “It’s disappointing not to win because at 1-0 up I thought we looked comfortable. We were knocking the ball about well and I thought we would go on and get a second goal but again someone makes a mistake and we get punished.

“At 1-1 I still thought we were the team in the ascendancy - we had good chances and their keeper had a couple of good saves. I feel for the players but we have got to be more ruthless at both ends of the park and I feel for the fans because they have watched us create lots of chances and not take them.

“Overall, it was a frustrating afternoon because nine times out of 10 if you play that game we get a victory. Having said, they had another chance when we made another mistake so we could have lost.

“We’re sitting only two points off second place but we should maybe have another four or five points on the board. Mistakes are costing us and it’s different players week in, week out. The majority of the game the guys have played great and I don’t think we are far away.

“It will be a hard game against Forfar but if we put in that same type of performance there is every chance we can go there and get three points.”

Numbers drawn on Wednesday, August 31 in the Stirling Albion Supporters Trust lottery were 5, 8, 18 and 30. There were no jackpot winners so the jackpot today (Wednesday) rises to £3750. Three lucky dip winners each received £20.
