Stewartry RFC over-30s defeat under-30s in festive friendly

The popular holiday fixture had a party atmosphere in the pre-match packed clubhouse.

The bragging rights were at stake as club captain John Picken, with the over-30s, took on his dad, club president Jim Picken’s under-30s select, which included younger son Andrew.

The conditions outside were the worst possible with a strong wind and heavy rain on a sodden pitch making for a battle to stay warm in the conditions.

Playing into the wind Andrew Wilson sped in for the first try in only eight minutes for the Whites over-30s. John Picken added the points.

Try number two arrived after 22 minutes with the White forwards driving Mick McCulloch over. John Picken again added the points.

Twenty five minutes and the Blacks were back in the game with TJ McCarney waltzing his way over for a try. Andrew Picken missed the kick.

Archie Nicholson closed the gap further with a second try for the Blacks, which this time Andrew Picken converted.

The Blacks, with the wind advantage, saw a high kick ahead chased down by prop Fraser Potts to put them ahead just before half-time – the under-30s taking a 19-14 lead thanks to Andrew Picken’s conversion.

The second half started with a bang with Stewartry’s leading try scorer Stevie Hogg breaking clear in the second minute to score.

John Picken added his third conversion to put the Whites 21-19 ahead in this entertaining game.

Archie Nicholson was in for a second try in 45 minutes and while Andrew Picken’s conversion was missed, the Blacks were 21-24 in front.

With the strong wind behind them the Whites were putting the pressure on and a charging Michael Yates put Andrew Picken on his backside as he set up Iain McMorran for what was the winning score.

John Picken scored his fourth conversion to outdo brother Andrew 4-2 with both teams scoring four tries.

President Jim Picken had his bottle of port out at half-time for his team but to no avail as son and captain John took the bragging rights in a game played in the right spirit and refereed in the festive spirit by Steve Kingston from Newton Stewart, who was glad to see his hot shower with the game finishing 10 minutes early to allow the players in for a deserved shower and to enjoy the party late into the night.
