Stewartry residents urged to donate clothes and medicine to help Ukrainians

Stewartry residents are being asked to donate clothes and medicine to help people in Ukraine.

There has been an outpouring of support across Scotland for Ukrainians following Russia’s invasion of the country last week, with people keen to help however they can.

The Ukraine Chapel at the former Halmuir POW camp near Lockerbie is organising a collection of items– from warm clothes and toiletries to duvets and blankets – to take out at the weekend.

And Nicole Geddes from Dalbeattie is offering to take donations from the Stewartry through on Saturday.

She said: “There’s a collection going through from Lockerbie, which is quite far away, so I’m gathering things here and taking them through.

“They are looking for blankets, babies’ things, nappies, medicine and clothes for adults and babies.

“If people drop it off between now and Friday I can take it through.”

Donations can be left at The Maxwell Arms in Dalbeattie – run by Nicole’s dad Drew – today and tomorrow.

And the youth club hall in Creetown will be open from 6.30pm to 8.45pm tonight for anyone looking to make donations there.

There was a show of support in Kirkcudbright on Monday night with the Johnston Centre lit up in blue and yellow – the colours of the Ukrainian flag.
