Steven Gerrard throws shade at Fernando Torres when pressed on "best" Liverpool question

Steven Gerrard has taken a subtle swipe at Fernando Torres when asked to name the best Liverpool player he played alongside.

The former Red was a star in the first team at Anfield for over 15 years.

During that time he saw players come and go before his eventual departure in 2015.

Torres and Luis Suarez are two of the best forwards to play on Merseyside in recent years, each going about their business in different ways.

They both eventually moved on with Torres heading to Chelsea for £50m in January 2011.

That same window saw Suarez arrive who would then depart three-and-a-half years later himself for Barcelona.

Torres' departure hurt Liverpool fans given their rivalry with the Blues and that factored in to Gerrard's thinking.

He was asked about his best sidekick on Sky Sports and replied: "From a Liverpool point of view it would probably be between Suarez or Torres.

"But if I was forced and pushed, because Luis done it over a longer period of time and because Luis left for a foreign club rather than Chelsea, I'd go with Luis Suarez."

Torres' switch to Chelsea was, at the time, a British transfer record.

The Spaniard struggled to replicate his Anfield form in west London but did come up with several big goals.

Torres has since opened up on his reasons for leaving Liverpool, who were in the midst of a transition, insisting time was against him in his pursuit of silverware.

"I was really happy at Liverpool but if you remember at that time the club was about to be sold and it was a very difficult situation," he told TalkSport previously.

"They sold all their best players, Javier Mascherano left, Xabi Alonso left, [manager] Rafa Benitez left, and they started bringing in young players so they needed maybe five, six, seven years to create a winning team again.

"I didn't have that time because I left my home in Atletico to win trophies.

"Unfortunately there was many lies by the owners that Liverpool had at that time and in the end I needed to find my own way which was Chelsea who I thought would be the club who would offer me the chance of winning trophies."

Suarez has seemed to echo that sentiment since leaving Liverpool.

He moved to Barcelona and immediately won the Champions League, which was his ultimate aim.

"My desire at Liverpool was to help get the club playing in the elite because they had been five years without it. We used to talk about it in the dressing room," he admitted to Jamie Carragher.

"If Liverpool are not in the Champions League, it is difficult to get the best players to come to the club.

"That's why for me to come to Barcelona there had to be that opportunity to not just play the tournament but to win it."
