Steven Gerrard says he knows what Harry Kane is thinking over transfer as Liverpool comparison made

Steven Gerrard believes Harry Kane's dilemma over whether to leave Tottenham Hotspur is 'different' to the decision he once made over his Liverpool career.

Kane became England's all-time leading goalscorer after scoring in a European Championship qualifier in Italy on Thursday, an achievement which arrived just a month on from surpassing Jimmy Greaves record of 266 goals for Tottenham.

Impressing for club and country has never proven to be a problem for the prolific forward, though questions continue to be asked of his silverware count. Kane, who turns 30 in July, is yet to win a major trophy and many are of the opinion this will only change should he secure a transfer away from Tottenham. He has been linked with a move to Manchester United this summer having previously been targeted by their rivals Manchester City.

Faced with a similar predicament during the early stages of his Liverpool career when Chelsea came calling in 2004, Gerrard has recognised the challenging position Kane finds himself in but believes the England international is not faced with the same moral concerns.

"Listen, I don’t want to open a can of worms," the Reds legend told Channel 4 after watching Kane score in a 2-0 win for England versus Ukraine on Sunday at Wembley.

"He’s got a big decision to make career-wise. I’ve been there myself where you’re thinking, 'is my team good enough to get me the medals'? Am I going to get out of my career what I want to get? It’s different for me because I grew up a Liverpool fan from the city, all my family were Liverpool fans and I knew winning one trophy more with Liverpool would have meant a lot more to me than being anywhere else."

"He’s not from Tottenham, he’s not been through Tottenham all the time," continued Gerrard in reference to the striker's time at Arsenal's academy growing up and four loan spells away from Spurs. "He’s got a big decision to make. I can’t give him any advice on that, but I bet you every single day of his life now moving forward it’s going to be on his mind.

"The important thing is he remains focused and he shows that in his performances. He doesn’t look like he’s got anything on his mind. He's really focused and in the zone, that’s why we admire him."
