Steven Gerrard Rangers return shut down with Ibrox hero delivering 'ship has sailed' verdict

Ally McCoist has shut down any talk over a Steven Gerrard return to Rangers by insisting: "I think that ship has sailed".

The Light Blues hero is in no doubt that Giovanni van Bronckhorst is under pressure with performances and results not convincing. The Ibrox men have lost four out of four in the Champions League to date with Liverpool hitting them for seven in Govan and both Napoli and Ajax picking up big wins over the Scottish side.

Domestically, they scraped past Dundee midweek in the Premier Sports Cup with the Scottish Championship side narrowly losing out 1-0 at Ibrox while they fell four points behind Celtic in the race for the league title with dropped points at home to Livingston. Former Rangers boss Gerrard is currently without a job after getting the bullet at Aston Villa. His old side kicked off life after the Liverpool legend in style with a 4-0 win over Brentford. Jamie O'Hara suggested a sensational return to Govan for Gerrard, however McCoist wasn't too sure admitting it would 'absolutely split fans'.

Speaking live on air during the talkSPORT breakfast show, he said: "No, I think that ship has sailed as well, Jamie. I think it would be absolutely split with the fans, I really do.

"It would be split, it might surprise some, I think a lot of people would take him back with open arms but I think there is still a bad taste in some of the supporters' mouths with the way it ended.

"I think that ship has sailed but there is no doubt Giovanni is under a bit of pressure."

Van Bronckhorst and his troops face a daunting trip to Naples to face a bang in form Napoli side on matchday five of their Champions League campaign. They know they need a result in Italy to keep hopes of European football after Christmas alive.
