Steven Gerrard drops hint of return to Premier League management as he addresses future

Steven Gerrard has made it clear he wants to return to Premier League management, admitting he wishes he still was a top-flight boss following his Aston Villa sacking.

Gerrard has been out of the game since October 2022 and was on hand to provide analysis for BT Sport on Saturday as Liverpool took on Chelsea in a Premier League clash that finished 0-0 at Anfield.

The match was Jurgen Klopp's 1000th as a boss and former Reds captain Gerrard was asked by BT Sport presenter Lynsey Hipgrave about Klopp's remarkable achievement and whether he would like to return to football management.

"I wish I still was," Gerrard responded. "I think when you're around the pitch, in the stadium, you see the teams come in, you speak to Jurgen, you get that buzz of a feeling of a matchday - I don't think I'll ever lose that or not want to be involved in that.

"I am enjoying it at the moment being around my family, watching football. I'm enjoying being back here today stress-free, but I think if you love the game and you've got it in your DNA you're always going to miss it."

Gerrard was recently linked with the Poland manager's job and was considered a strong option to replace Czeslaw Michniewicz, who vacated his following the World Cup.

But Polish Football Association chief Cezary Kulesza played down the former Rangers and Villa boss getting the job.

Poland are looking for a boss with previous experience at international level, and Paulo Bento - who has managed Portugal - is now believed to be the prime candidate for the role.

Kulesza told radio station RMF FM: "The candidate is from abroad. I would like the decision to be made today or tomorrow, but it depends on the other party. The most important criterion was whether he had previously led a national team."
