Steven Davis in Rangers injury confession as midfielder outlines return approach after 'fearing the worst'

Crocked Rangers veteran Steven Davis admits he "feared the worst" after picking up a horror training ground injury last year.

The 38-year-old’s season is over after suffering a devastating double ACL tear during a freak training ground accident just before Christmas, and faces a battle to return to his best under Michael Beale. The stricken Northern Ireland skipper - whose Rangers deal expires this summer - has been warned it could take anywhere from six months to a year before he’s able to resume action.

Record Sport understands a deal could be waiting on Davis should he prove his fitness levels, but the Ibrox hero admits his worst fears were realised when he found out the extend of the injury but is hopeful about his Scottish Premiership return hopes. However, Davis told Rangers TV: "I have to show a little more patience than I would usually like but it is progressing.

"It is hard to see the progress day to day which is what I am finding frustrating but when you take it over a week to two-week basis then you can definitely see an improvement. I am very fortunate to be at a club like Rangers where we have the best staff in every department and the medical staff are no different.

"They will keep me right through the rehab and give me the best possible chance of achieving the dream of pulling on the jersey again. I feared the worst at the time as no one else around me in training was very innocuous so you have that fear and the scans then proved that was the case.

"I am very fortunate that is the first time I have had a long-term injury in my career. Previously the longest I have been out is three months so it is a new challenge for me. The club, the lads, my family and the staff have been brilliant with me and now I am doing everything I can to improve my condition."
