Steven Bergwijn shuts down Rangers annihilation question as Ajax star dismisses Celtic drubbing

Rangers' Old Firm nightmare is irrelevant when it comes to Wednesday's Champions League blockbuster, according to Ajax standout Steven Bergwijn.

Gio van Bronckhorst 's men kick-off their Champions League group stage campaign with a trip to the Netherlands. And the Ibrox outfit will need to reset after their almighty slip up on at Parkhead on Saturday. But the Bergwijn insists his opponents annihilation at the hands of Celtic will have no bearing on his thoughts ahead of Wednesday.

Ajax were involved in their own four goal game at the weekend, cruising to a 4-0 win over Cambuur. However, the former Spurs and PSV Eindhoven winger - who netted a double in the league clash- reckons both weekend results will make no difference at all. He said: "Rangers ' defeat in the Old Firm game doesn't mean anything to me. It tells me nothing. They eliminated PSV from the Champions League play-off game so they must be good.

"When I watched their matches, I thought they were quite happy to sit in defensively and play on the break and I think they will do the same against us. But we shouldn't be interested in how Rangers play. We need to look at our own strengths and use them to our advantage.

"I am in a good place at the moment. I am playing well and happy to be at Ajax."

Meanwhile, Ajax suffered an injury blow after manager Alfred Schreuder revealed left back Owen Wijndal will miss the game on Wednesday with an ankle injury.

He said: "Unfortunately, the Rangers game comes too early for him. We are in a great group, but it is a tough group too. For me, Liverpool is the big favourite.

"On a good day we can beat the other teams. But of course, Napoli has an excellent team too and Rangers eliminated PSV in the play-offs."
