Steven Bergwijn proves point to Antonio Conte and Tottenham as Jack Clarke recaptures Leeds form

It was a very busy summer at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in terms of outgoings as a host of players moved on either on loan or permanently. In total, nine players, including the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Harry Winks and Destiny Udogie, departed on temporary deals, with six leaving for good as part of Antonio Conte's changes.

Steven Bergwijn was one of the sextet to head for pastures new after finally securing a move back to his homeland as he penned a long-term deal with Ajax. Others to depart Tottenham included Pierluigi Gollini, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Jack Clarke, Kion Etete and Marcel Lavinier.

So how have all six started the 2022/23 season? football.london takes a look

Steven Bergwijn (Ajax)

The 2021/22 campaign was such a frustrating one for Bergwijn at Tottenham with limited minutes coming his way. Even despite impressing on the international stage and scoring some crucial goals for Netherlands, the 24-year-old was still coming on in games after Lucas Moura and handed limited minutes in the run-in.

Clearly intent on leaving Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in the summer and securing a move to Ajax after starting his career in the Dutch giants' academy, his wish came true at the start of July after penning a five-year contract following his £27.8million transfer.

Bergwijn has since made an incredible start to life at the Johan Cruijff ArenA, scoring eight goals in his first seven games in all competitions for Ajax. Six of those have come in the Eredivisie, including two last weekend against SC Cambuur and a hat-trick at home to Groningen midway through August.

He was on the scoresheet again in midweek with Ajax's final goal in their 4-0 triumph over Rangers in the Champions League. Operating on the left of a front three for his new club, Bergwijn is currently at the top of his game and showing Conte and all at Tottenham why he maybe deserved more minutes in the second part of last term.

Cameron Carter-Vickers (Celtic)

Making a real name for himself on loan at Celtic last season, the Scottish champions made his deal permanent at the start of June as he penned a four-year contract at Celtic Park. The 24-year-old has continued to play an integral role in Ange Postecoglou's team, starting in all six of their league games this campaign.

Having helped his side seal a 4-0 win over fierce rivals Rangers last weekend, Celtic unfortunately couldn't back up their triumph when Real Madrid made the trip to Glasgow on Tuesday evening in the Champions League as they lost 3-0. Shakhtar Donetsk are next up for Celtic in midweek as Champions League action resumes.

Jack Clarke (Sunderland)

Clarke's move to Tottenham from Leeds United in July 2019 just never went to plan for both player and club. After frustrating loan spells with Leeds United and QPR before injury curtailed his time with Stoke City, a switch to Sunderland at the turn of the year was just what he needed to recapture his best form.

Although dropping down to League One at the time, the winger played a key role in helping the Black Cats seal a return to the Championship. It came as no surprise to see them want to sign him permanently in the summer, with his transfer going through in July.

Scoring on the opening day against Coventry City, the 21-year-old had a major impact in their recent 3-0 win over Rotherham United as he scored one and assisted the other two at the Stadium of Light. Starting in all eight of their league games so far and scoring two and assisting three in the process, the York-born ace is now getting his career back on track and displaying the form he initially showed at Leeds when breaking through into Marcelo Bielsa's side.

Pierluigi Gollini (Fiorentina)

A firm favourite with the Tottenham squad last season following his loan switch from Atalanta, Gollini returned to the Serie A club in the summer with Spurs not making his switch permanent. The 27-year-old has once again headed out on loan, this time linking up with Fiorentina.

Starting the season in the team as he kept two clean sheets in his first three games, Gollini was then dropped down to the bench for their following two league matches as Pietro Terracciano came in between the sticks. However, he did return to the team on Thursday for their 1-1 draw with RFS in the Europa Conference League.

Kion Etete (Cardiff City)

Following successful loan spells with Northampton Town and Cheltenham Town last term, Etete departed Tottenham at the start of August to join Cardiff City on a permanent deal. Coming off the bench in his first four games for the Bluebirds, the young striker has been absent through injury since the end of last month after rolling his ankle in an U21s match.

Speaking after the 0-0 draw with Preston North End, Cardiff boss Steve Morison outlined that his man would be out be out for a short period despite rumours doing the rounds that he was set for a significant period on the sidelines.

"He rolled his ankle during the game against Sheffield United. Ignore the report that was going round this morning because that's nonsense," Morison told WalesOnline. "He's not going to be back this week, but it's definitely nowhere near what's been said. Someone's spreading lies. He's hurt his ankle, but it's not that bad."

Marcel Lavinier (Swindon Town)

Tottenham confirmed the departure of Lavinier on deadline day following the conclusion of his contract. Linking up with League Two side Swindon Town, the right-back made his debut for the Robins last weekend as he played the full 90 minutes in their 0-0 draw away at Gillingham.
