Steve Spagnuolo praised S Mike Edwards for recent standout performances

The depth on defense for the Kansas City Chiefs has been a source of strength, with several players in and out of the lineup. The additions of several free agents this past offseason have fortified the unit and shown its value through five games this season.

The Chiefs signed safety Mike Edwards after he spent four years with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He’s played significant roles in the secondary, allowing extra flexibility in the defensive game plan. Chiefs defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo spoke about Edwards’ impact this season during Monday’s Zoom press conference.

“We’ve given him a little bit more playing time if you’ve noticed; he went in, I think, the third series, second or third series, and he’s on that,” Spagnuolo explained. “He’s got a really good feel for the game. I mean, he’d tell you he’d like to have made that catch over there on the sideline and kind of had it in his hand because he is a ball hawk. I mean, he goes after the football.

“He had interceptions, and when he was down there, and in the Tampa Bay plan, I thought he did some really nice things for us in the red zone. Dave (Merrit) and I were talking about that this morning. I mean, he deserves to be out there; we got him in certain packages. Maybe we’ll get him a couple of others, but I’m glad we got Mike guys like Mike and Dru (Tranquill) coming in here and adding to the guys we had. It’s been really, really important.”

Edwards has already tallied a sack and interception his season, appearing in every game.
