Steve Cooper tipped to make £26m Nottingham Forest transfer decision amid Newcastle links

Nottingham Forest are not expected to make Renan Lodi’s loan move permanent in the summer, according to reports in Spain.

The full-back joined Forest in the summer, signing a season-long loan deal from Atletico Madrid. The loan includes an option to make the move permanent in the summer for a fee of around €30million (£26.3m).

Lodi has been a regular in Steve Cooper ’s starting line up in the Premier League so far this season, and looks set to play a key role in the club’s fight to stay in the division at the end of the season. But it seems that his future may not lie at the City Ground.

As reported by Revelo journalist Mateo Moretto , "the signs" point to Forest taking the decision not to exercise the buy option in Lodi’s deal at the end of the season, meaning the player will return to Atletico at the end of the season. The journalist adds that the clause in the full-back’s deal with Forest is an option to buy and not an obligation.

Should that decision be taken by Steve Cooper and his team, then it would leave the 24-year-old on the lookout for another club in the summer transfer window, with it said that he has no future at Atletico.

Newcastle United are one of the teams said to be interested in signing the defender when the window re-opens, as Eddie Howe looks to strengthen his squad with the backing of the club’s owners. Everton have also been linked with an interest, but that could depend on the outcome of their own fight against relegation.

Lodi has played 19 games in the Premier League for Forest so far this season. He could be in international action this week after joining up with the Brazil squad for the international break.

Brazil take on Morocco in a friendly on Saturday, with kick-off and 10pm UK time. He will then return to Forest as the team step up preparations for the crucial Premier League match against Wolves at the City Ground.
