Steve Cooper delivers verdict on Nottingham Forest defeat to Tottenham Hotspur

Head coach Steve Cooper was left with mixed feelings after Nottingham Forest’s 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Despite having nothing to show for their efforts, it was a good performance by the Reds at the City Ground. They were twice punished by England captain Harry Kane, but had been the better side in the first half especially.

Lewis O’Brien forced a good save from Hugo Lloris, while Morgan Gibbs-White and Neco Williams also went close during the 90 minutes. Perhaps the hosts' best chance fell to Ryan Yates, who put a free header wide after the break, when the match was still in the balance.

“The overriding feeling will be one of disappointment, because we didn’t get anything from the game - and, in the end, results are the most important thing,” said Cooper. “The performance was good, we really took the game to Spurs and stuck to the plan that we wanted to bring to the game; we got them on the back foot, which allowed us to have loads of the ball, get high up the pitch and really get into good areas to threaten the goal.

“But that’s what we didn’t do. For all of the good play we had, all of the good numbers up the pitch and territory, we didn’t then turn it into enough attempts on goal.

“I know that’s the hardest thing in the game to do. But we didn’t.

“But I won’t be narrow-minded enough not to see that there were loads of good things from our game. We just need to keep going with our ideas.”

Forest have picked up four points from their first four matches, in what has been an encouraging start to their Premier League campaign. Next up is a trip to face Manchester City on Wednesday night.
