Steve Bruce: Blackpool confirm manager will miss Barnsley match after death of four-month-old grandson

Blackpool have announced that manager Steve Bruce will miss their game this weekend following a family bereavement.

The Tangerines announced in a statement on Friday night that Bruce would not be at Bloomfield Road for Saturday afternoon’s meeting with League One rivals Barnsley following the tragic passing of his four-month-old grandson, Madison.

“The Club can announce that Head Coach Steve Bruce will not be in attendance at tomorrow's fixture against Barnsley due to the tragic passing of his four-month old grandson, Madison,” Blackpool said.

“Everyone at the football club send their love to Steve and his family. We ask that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.”

Madison was the child of Bruce’s daughter and son-in-law, the former QPR, Fulham and Millwall striker Matt Smith, whose former clubs have sent their condolences to the 35-year-old after the tragic news.

Millwall wrote on X: “Millwall Football Club sends its unconditional love and support to Matt Smith, and his family and friends, following the passing of his four-month old son, Madison. We are with you every step of the way, Smudger.”

“Everyone at QPR sends their deepest condolences, love and support to Matt Smith and family following the tragic passing of his baby son, Madison,” wrote QPR. “We’re all with you Smudger.”

Salford City assistant manager Alex Bruce, Steve Bruce’s son and uncle to Madison, will also not be in attendance when the League Two side play away at Crewe on Saturday.

Salford said: “Salford City announces that Assistant Manager Alex Bruce will not be in attendance at tomorrow’s fixture away at Crewe Alexandra due to the tragic passing of his four-month old nephew, Madison.

“All at the football club send our love and full support to Alex, Matt Smith and the family. We request that their privacy is respected as they come to terms with this sudden and unexpected loss in their family.”
