The Los Angeles Rams are well-known for not playing starters in the preseason. The Rams prioritize giving younger players snaps and building depth in the preseason. Additionally, they are looking to keep their starters as healthy as possible.
Rams quarterback Stetson Bennett, who is the No. 3 quarterback on the Rams’ depth chart, is expected to see a lot of snaps this preseason. Bennett is a two-time national champion from the University of Georgia. He is entering his second season in the NFL, but was away from the Rams for most of his rookie season after being placed on the non-football injury/illness list.
The Rams’ top quarterback Matthew Stafford won’t play at all this preseason. His back-up, Jimmy Garoppolo will serve a two-game suspension to start the season. Garoppolo was on the Las Vegas Raiders last season and could want to see some preseason action with his new team. However, Los Angeles head coach Sean McVay will allow Garoppolo to decide if he wants to play this preseason.
“As far as Jimmy (Garoppolo), I’ll talk to Jimmy. I would probably say probably not because I think it’s important for Stetson to get a bunch of work and Jimmy’s played a lot in this league,” McVay said. “If he said that he thought he wanted to, knowing that he’s going to miss those first couple weeks, I’d be open to it. My inclination right now is that I would not want to play him unless he told me he wanted to.”
The Rams’ No. 4 quarterback, Dresser Finn, figures to see a lot of playing time this preseason as well.
