Steps will be taken to install 12 sub-stations in Chennai this year to help in stable electricity supply, Electricity Minister V. Senthil Balaji said in the Assembly on Tuesday.
At the question hour, Congress MLA J.M.H. Aassan Maulaana (Velachery) raised the problem of low voltage in his constituency which has about 60,000 connections. Enquiries with officials of Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation Limited (Tangedco) revealed that at present, there were 250 transformers and if the number was increased to 500, the issue could be sorted out, he said.
Recalling his request for installing a sub-station, Mr. Maulaana pointed out that land was identified and called for installing it at the earliest. Mr. Balaji said steps were being taken to install 12 sub-stations in Chennai by this year.
To a similar question from DMK MLA G. Thalapathi (Madurai North), the Minister said steps were being taken to install 16 sub-stations in Madurai district by this year.
