Steven Spielberg has high praise for Denis Villeneuve's Dune trilogy... and it's absolutely warranted.
"Recently, I've loved the Dune movies. They are among my favorite science-fiction movies, not just recently, but of all time. Especially the second film," Spielberg told Empire. "I think [Part Two] is the best movie Denis has ever made. I cannot wait to see the third one. I’m sure he’ll show it to me early. I’m such a fan of his."
This is pretty high praise given that Spielberg is one of the most prolific directors, not just of sci-fi, but of all time... point blank period. Since the third and final Dune installment isn't out until December, I'm sure Villeneuve will have no problem holding a special screening for his pal, or simply sending along a screening link.
Back in 2024, Spielberg told Villeneuve directly during a DGA event that the scene where Paul rides on a sandworm was "one of the greatest things I have ever seen. Ever. You made the desert look like liquid!"
Interestingly enough, Villeneuve's next directorial venture is not another sci-fi film... but the new James Bond. The filmmaker hasn't directed a true action film since 2015's Sicario, which received several Academy Award nominations. It'll be interesting to see what he decides to do with Bond, though we don't even know who will play the new 007.
Dune 3 arrives in theaters on December 18. For more on what to watch, fill out your calendar with our guide to 2026's biggest movie release dates.
