Stephen Robinson has revealed he was desperate to take Rangers midfielder Steven Davis to Paisley before he penned fresh terms with the Ibrox club.
The midfielder came to an agreement on a new one-year deal but was linked with both the Buddies and Motherwell while his future was still to be ironed out. He hadn't decided over his next move and while Rangers came to a decision on what they were doing, Robinson made his pitch to land the Northern Ireland international.
However, his efforts proved to be too late after a text exchange with the 37-year-old, who had already signed on the dotted line after the Saints boss asked if there was any truth in the rumours that he going to join St Mirren. Davis joined fellow Ibrox veterans Allan McGregor and Scott Arfield in extending their deals by a further 12 months as Giovanni van Bronckhorst looks to reclaim the Premiership crown from Celtic and make a splash in the Champions League as he bids to successfully come through the qualifying stages.

On his pursuit of trying to land Davis this summer, Robinson said: : “I was desperate to sign him. I was hoping he wouldn’t get another deal.
“There were a lot of rumours that he was coming to St Mirren.
“I texted him to say, ‘Is there any truth that you are interested?’
“But he had already signed a contract with Rangers and I wasn’t surprised by that."
Rangers are back in pre-season training as Van Bronckhorst eyes up new recruits ahead of the campaign kicking-off.
John Souttar has already arrived after penning a pre-contract agreement from Hearts earlier this year.
Antonio Colak is another wanted at Ibrox with the situation still up in the air between the Light Blues and PAOK.
