Stephen Robinson calls for calm heads as St Mirren close in on historic top-six finish

Stephen Robinson says he won’t count his chickens before they hatch as St Mirren close in on a first top-half finish since 1985.

The Buddies outthought and outfought Hearts at Tynecastle to seal three points that all but assured a top-six spot.

Livingston are now the only team that can deny the Saints that target, who currently sit five points behind with just two games left before the split.

And while joking he’ll get a better kip once he knows relegation has officially been avoided, Robinson is adamant he’ll keep his players focused until a Premiership top-six space is confirmed beyond all doubt.

When asked if he thought a top-six finish was in the bag, he said: “Can we still get relegated? I’ll sleep better when I know we can’t get relegated.

“This group of players just keep defying the odds. The squad we have here has got a real belief in them,

“We believed we could come here and win today - there was no bravado in that.

“We believed we could do that. We proved that and now we need to go to Ibrox and get points.

“The top six will be guaranteed when no one can catch us and at the moment, teams can still catch us.

“Hearts are a good side who have players who can change the game, so we had to concentrate and be disciplined and credit to the players to win at a very, very difficult venue.”
