Stephen Humphrys may have bagged himself the Scottish Premiership Goal of the Season award already.
But the Hearts striker was more impressed with his team’s bravery as they came from behind to beat Dundee United. Robbie Neilson’s team kept the chasing pack for third at arm’s length after a disappointing midweek home defeat to Rangers.
And it looked like being another bad day at the office in Gorgie after Steven Fletcher flicked Dundee United into an early lead at Tynecastle. Liam Fox’s men were reduced to ten men when Ryan Edwards was sent off after a VAR check followed his robust challenge on Andy Halliday. Glenn Middleton almost doubled the lead when he hit the post, but it was a different Hearts and United that emerged after the break. Lawrence Shankland made it three goals in three games against his former club, claiming his 21st of the season to draw Hearts level.
Sub Alex Cochrane put them ahead before Humphrys’ moment of magic saw him send an opportunist effort sailing over Mark Birighitti and in to seal the points in stoppage time.
“I’m more happy about the three points to be honest,” he told Hearts TV. “I said in another interview that just coming on as a sub and having an impact and getting the deficit back to one-all, then Alex scored what would properly be the winning goal. Great goal from him.
“At that point I was just really happy with seeing it out and getting the three points. But scoring that goal is the icing on the cake.
“If there’s one thing people can’t really label us as, it’s unbrave. The way we play might not always work but we want to be a passing team and an attacking team, direct and entertain the fans that come here every week.
“Even again today, the stadium is sold out again. It was fantastic support.
“But one thing we pride ourselves on is our bravery At half-time the lads came in and we said: ‘Let’s just not panic. We’re a top, top team. We’re third in the league for a reason, We’re at home,’
“If someone was to offer you any team in this league with ten men for 45 minutes, we’d snap their hand off. We went out in the second half and knew once we got the first one, the rest would come. “
