Stephen Flynn takes on Chris McEleny in National sweepstake as group stages continue

SCOTLAND might be out the competition but figures across the country will still be supporting their teams in The National’s Euro 2024 charity sweepstake.

Tuesday is a particularly big day as group stage action nears its end with four games set to take place.

First up, we have the SNP’s Stephen Flynn taking on Alba’s general secretary Chris McEleny with England and Slovenia respectively.

Despite being top of their group, England have underwhelmed so far with a 1-0 win over Serbia and a 1-1 draw with Denmark.

Slovenia meanwhile have drawn both their games 1-1 so far and so will hope to secure a win over Gareth Southgate’s side.

Flynn is playing for Community Food Initiatives North East while McEleny is competing for Alzheimer Scotland.

In that same group, we have writer and presenter Alistair Heather’s (above) Denmark vs Gillian Mackay's Serbia.

It’s been a tight group so far with both Denmark and Slovenia on two points and Serbia on one and England leading the way with four.

Heather is hoping Denmark can repeat their 1992 triumph to win £1000 for Dundee United Community Trust while Mackay is playing for the Stroke Association.

Elsewhere, we’ve also got former SNP Westminster leader Ian Blackford (below) against National columnist Ruth Wishart.

Blackford has drawn the Netherlands while Wishart has Austria in what could be a tight game.

The Netherlands managed to pick up a 2-1 win over Poland in their opening fixture before a relatively dull 0-0 with France.

Austria meanwhile impressed in their opener despite losing 1-0 to France before comfortably dispatching Poland 3-1 in their second game.

Finally, comedian Zara Gladman (above) will play National columnist and former Make Me Prime Minister contender Kelly Given as France play Poland.

It’s been a difficult campaign for Poland, who are already out the competition with successive defeats to the Netherlands and Austria.

Both are playing for the same charity: Medical Aid for Palestinians.
