Stephen Ferris makes bold claim on Ulster's European prospects

Stephen Ferris believes Ulster can go all the way in this season's European Champions Cup.

Dan McFarland's side will face defending champions Toulouse in the last-16 of the competition after progressing through the group stages unbeaten.

They will travel to France for the first leg on the weekend of April 8-10 before boasting home advantage for the return leg one week later.

Former Ulster, Ireland and British and Irish Lions forward Ferris believes McFarland's side should have nothing to fear from Toulouse, or any other side in the competition.

When asked whether Ulster can go all the way in Europe, Ferris told the BBC: "'Why not?' would be the question I would ask.

"What a signing Duane Vermeulen has been. He's going about his work. Not making any mistakes and just leading by example.

"I feel really positive. If it had have been Leinster or Harlequins, the Premiership champions, my thoughts would be the same that we can go and get the victory [in the last 16]."

Ulster beat Clermont home and away, and have already beaten Leinster away from home.

Ferris believes those results are evidence of an Ulster side on the rise, and believes the youthful exuberance of McFarland's side is reaping reward.

"We went away to the RDS and beat Leinster in their own backyard. They had a few quality players playing that day," he added.

"The huge positive that is coming out of Ulster Rugby at the minute is all the young guys that are coming in and playing so, so well and learning so much on the go. Why can't they win?

"What is it? Six losses in 60 games at the Kingspan Stadium over the last five seasons in all competitions. That's pretty impressive and no team will want to come the Kingspan Stadium including Toulouse."

Ulster are currently 25/1 with most bookmakers to win the Champions Cup, while Toulouse are around 9/2.

Leinster remain favourites to go all the way and are at around 5/2 with the bookies.

Ferris added: "[Outwardly] It's the old cliché, game by game, not looking too far ahead but if I was part of that team there would be conversations being had saying 'look lads we've got great opportunities both in the URC and the Heineken Champions to try and get some silverware this year'.

"It's about time Ulster won some silverware and this season is a great opportunity to do so."
