Former Labour MP Alan Johnson argued about eating dinner on the sofa during an incendiary performance on Steph's Packed Lunch today. Alan Johnson, 72, whose political career includes various Cabinet roles from 2003 to 2006 was responding to the story that Simon Cowell enjoys a TV dinner with his son.
An incredulous Johnson said: "I always switch the telly off when eating dinner. I mean the thought of eating your dinner on the sofa, that’s not what sofas are there for.”
When probed further as to his reasoning why, Johnson replied: “They’re there to sit and relax, chat and cry. But they’re not there to eat.

"I mean you wouldn’t eat in a toilet. Would you?”
His comments left hosts Steph McGovern, 39, Denise Van Outen, 47 and comedian Marcus Brigstocke, 49, openly amused. Appearing to appease the core demographic of the show - people who eat food whilst watching Steph's Packed Lunch - Denise jumped in with a cheeky reminder.
Grinning from ear to ear Denise said: “I think lunchtime is a really good time to watch the telly and eat.” Her co-host quickly took up the pro-sofa-for-telly-dinner baton.
Steph added: “It’s really good for your health, your finances," much to the audience's laughter.
Other guests on the show were Paddy McGuinness, Ore Oduba, Romy Gill, Linda Barker and Hanson.
Viewers were quick to react on social media. Pamela McFarlane wrote on Facebook: “Steph you are brilliant. I work from home as a small business owner and your programme is my lunchtime treat. I laugh out loud and just want to join the party, eat the food, and have a giggle! Fabulous viewing, good for the soul. Thank you x.”
Elizabeth Scott tweeted: "I'm on my own so I eat my dinner sitting on the sofa watching TV. But I have a little fold-up table. Really handy."
Steph's Packed Lunch airs on weekdays at 12:30pm on Channel 4
