Passengers on a Stena Line ferry set to head to Belfast on Friday evening had to spend the night on the stricken boat after it suffered engine problems.
People boarded the vessel for a 10.30pm sailing from Liverpool at around 9.30pm on Friday, but were then told they would be delayed due to weather issues, according to one passenger.
However, passengers were subsequently told there were engine problems and the departure would be delayed.
But it was around 8am this morning (Saturday) before those on board got off the boat, according to one of those on board. Passengers were then offered a chance to travel north to Cairnryan and take the ferry to Larne.
A large number of people stayed at Liverpool, however, were they tried to see if Stena Line could help them get to Belfast.
Stena Line said they could “confirm that unfortunately Stena Edda has suffered a technical problem, which we are looking into”.
They added: “All the passengers will be accommodated on the next sailing, or alternate routes.”
In a tweet, they added: “Our call centre is currently experiencing a high volume of calls and wait times.”
A passenger on the Liverpool Belfast sailing said they were offered a refund and had to book a flight to Belfast instead.
