After missing the first few days of OTAs, Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Diontae Johnson has arrived at workouts for the second week, per Steelers beat writer Chris Adamski.
Johnson joins the team in the midst of a contract dispute. Coming off of his best season, Johnson enters the final season of his rookie contract and is looking for a contract extension prior to the team’s regular-season opener on September 11.
In 2021, Johnson topped 100 receptions and 1,100 receiving yards to lead the team in both categories. But it was wise for Johnson to swallow his pride and show up like he’s fighting for a roster in addition to a big new contract. The Steelers drafted two dynamic wide receivers in the 2022 NFL draft and all of them will be competing for snaps.
There’s no denying Johnson deserves a new contract. And a raise. The sticking point is going to be the money, as it always is. Hopefully, the two sides can come together on a number and Pittsburgh can have the foursome of Johnson, Chase Claypool, George Pickens and Calvin Austin for a very long time.
