Steelers vs Niners: What to expect when Pittsburgh is on defense

Last season the Pittsburgh Steelers defense took a step back. This was due in large part to a pectoral injury to edge rusher T.J. Watt that sidelined him for seven games and limited him in at least two more. To be blunt the entire defense collapsed without the presence of No. 90 on the field.

But Watt is back and the front office has made improvements at all three levels. This week the Steelers square off with the San Francisco 49ers who boast one of the most dynamic and balanced offenses in the NFC. There’s nothing like the team’s biggest test right out of the gate.

Here’s what to expect when the Steelers are on defense.

Know where Christian McCaffrey is at all times

Kyle Terada-USA TODAY Sports

In terms of all-around playmakers, no one gets it done like Niners running back Christian McCaffrey. The Steelers need to have multiple players assigned to McCaffrey depending on the situation. linebackers Kwon Alexander and Cole Holcomb, safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick and Damontae Kazee among others. It’s going to take a village and communication is going to be vital.

The tandem of Deebo Samuel and Brandon Aiyuk are a handful for any secondary. The trio of Patrick Peterson, Levi Wallace and Joey Porter Jr. are going to be busy dealing with them. And with the Niners threat to run the football, they might not get as much help as they would like.

Quick pressure on Purdy

Tommy Gilligan-USA TODAY Sports

Excuse us if we aren’t sold on Brock Purdy as a franchise quarterback yet. The Steelers can come at you in waves with the pass rush and I expect the defense to throw everything at him from all angles and force him to make quick decisions in an effort to create mistakes.

Coming out fast and playing fast will be vital. That means on every play the Steelers have to swarm to the football. Never assume your guy has the tackle. Gang tackling, being physical and sending a message will keep the Niners defense on alert.
