Pittsburgh Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth grew up a New England Patriots fan, but admittedly, he’s glad he isn’t playing football for coach Bill Belichick. In fact, he’d rather play for Buffalo Bills coach Sean McDermott over the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach.
“I’m not going to lie. I wouldn’t want to play for coach Belichick,” Freiermuth said, when appearing on the “Off The Field with Aditi” podcast. “Yeah, I’ve heard some of the stories. I’m good.”
Buy Patriots TicketsWhen asked who he would like to play for right now, the former Patriots fan twisted the knife by choosing McDermott and the Bills.
“Sean McDermott with the Bills. If I were to cheer for a team other than the Steelers, it would have to be the Bills because they’re good guys to compete against,” said Freiermuth. “It seems like they run things the right way, organizationally. And I think they put their players in the best position to win.”
Ouch.
In many ways, Freiermuth’s comments make it feel like we’ve all left the real world for the Upside Down.
Everything the Steelers tight end said about the Bills is exactly the way the Patriots were described for nearly two decades. They were the highest standard in football, and nearly everyone wanted to play for them. The Bills, on the other hand, were the complete opposite. They were a walking meme—an accident waiting to happen.
Now, they’re the class of the AFC, and the Patriots have become the punchline team in the NFL. It’s crazy how quickly things can change in a few years.
