According to NFL reporter Aaron Wilson, the Pittsburgh Steelers are signing wide receiver Aron Cruickshank. Cruickshank is a former Rutgers star who signed as an undrafted free agent with the Chicago Bears.
In college, Cruickshank was primarily known as a special teamer and was among the best in the Big Ten during his career. His career kickoff return average was an impressive 23.4 yards per return. Cruickshank also hauled in 42 passes for 385 yards in 2022.
Pittsburgh is working hard with just one preseason game to go to put the final touches on the roster. After Saturday’s win over the Buffalo Bills, head coach Mike Tomlin acknowledged that the team was in the process of completely making over the guts of the special teams unit with roster changes. Perhaps the addition of Cruickshank could be to get a new look at the kickoff return piece with wide receiver Calvin Austin III already cemented in as the primary punt returner.
The Steelers take on the Atlanta Falcons this week in the team’s final preseason game.
