A calf injury to Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson opened the door for Justin Fields to compete for the starting job. However, after working as the starter for the vast majority of the snaps in training camp, Fields only got a few drives against the Houston Texans.
NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport talked about the starter situation and noted that the Steelers are still sorting out who will start this weekend against the Buffalo Bills. This is related to the injury Wilson suffered and the overwhelming level of caution the team wants to take with Wilson.
Rapoport also noted that offensive coordinator Arthur Smith likes what Fields brings in his system.

At this point, the Steelers know what they have in the veteran Wilson but even after one preseason game, there’s not much to glean from Fields’ performance. No matter if the Steelers are really giving Fields a shot to be the starter or not, he needs a longer look this week.
