According to Pittsburgh Steelers beat writer Gerry Dulac, the notion that the team is unanimous in supporting Kenny Pickett as the starting quarterback in 2024 isn’t quite true. Dulac noted there is an internal division over whether Pickett is the answer or if the team should go with Mason Rudolph instead.
The Steelers turned to Rudolph after Pickett suffered a high ankle sprain and veteran Mitch Trubisky failed to replace him. Rudolph won his final three starts of the regular season which helped Pittsburgh sneak into the playoffs. Rudolph also started against the Buffalo Bills
If this is the case, there is some business to take care of before it would really matter. Rudolph is set to be an unrestricted free agent in just two weeks and after his strong finish to 2023, he should have some suitors.
Dulac also noted that it feels less and less likely to pursue any other free-agent quarterbacks if the team is willing to re-sign Rudolph and let him and Pickett battle it out for the starting job.
