It might not have been the turning point in the game, but Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Russell Wilson’s interception in the end zone vs the Kansas City Chiefs as the Steelers were driving down to score in the first quarter certainly put the Steelers behind.
Some hypothesized that the reason for the interception was a lack of effort on the route by wide receiver George Pickens. Keep in mind, Pickens was no the target on the throw. It was tight end Pat Freiermuth. But some felt like Pickens giving up on the route allowed the Chiefs safety to roll to the middle and snag the pick.
When head coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media on Monday, he absolved Pickens of any blame for the interception and said his route had zero impact on it.
If anything the blame can be shared between Freiermuth and Wilson. Freiermuth ran straight to the safety rather than staying upfield and made their job easier and Wilson because once he saw that, he could have gone to another read.
