One of the hottest names on the coaching market this offseason is Pittsburgh Steelers defensive assistant and linebackers coach Brian Flores. He’s interviewed for multiple defensive coordinator vacancies and will be interviewing for the head coaching job with the Arizona Cardinals.
Sometimes it is hard to gauge the impact of an assistant coach but defensive tackle Chris Wormley made it clear that Flores was a big part of the run defense resurgence.
“If you see what we did from being 32nd in run D to top-10, he had a big part in that,” Wormley said. “I think teams would love to have a guy like that.”
The Steelers defense made a huge turnaround after the bye week. Part of this was because linebacker T.J. Watt came off IR but it certainly sounds like Flores had a hand in things as well. Perhaps head coach Mike Tomlin expanded his role in an effort to improve the defense. If so, it paid off.
