Steelers become salary cap compliant with release of CB William Jackson III

The release of Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback William Jackson III was a necessity because the Pittsburgh Steelers were nearing the start of the NFL league year and were still around $2 million over the salary cap. But with his release, once it’s made official by the team, Pittsburgh will be within compliance with the salary cap and have around $10 million in cap space.

In the big picture of the NFL offseason, $10 million won’t go far. This means Jackson might be the first name we heard but he won’t be the last player who will be released to free up cap space.

Pittsburgh traded for Jackson last season at the trade deadline to help bolster a banged-up secondary. Unfortunately, just days after joining the team, Jackson was sidelined with a back injury that sent him to IR and he never played a snap. It was never clear if the injury happened before or after the trade.
