In the midst of the 2023 NFL draft, the Pittsburgh Steelers front office kept busy and not just with draft picks. The team took a proactive stance when they were not going to get the slot cornerback they needed, so instead the team took a moment during the draft and signed Chandon Sullivan in free agency. The team made the signing official today in the form of a one-year contract.
Sullivan gives the Steelers the slot cornerback this team was lacking. And no, this is no dig on Arthur Maulet. Maulet has a particular set of skills that really fits Pittsburgh at times in the slot. But Sullivan brings something completely different in terms of coverage skills. Last season on passing downs, Maulet came off the field and Cameron Sutton slid down into the slot. With Sutton gone, Sullivan can be the guy to come in and fill that role.
The Steelers drafted two long, press-man cornerbacks in the draft and Joey Porter Jr. in particular is going to push for playing time on the outside. Sullivan could find himself competing with Levi Wallace for reps in the slot if Porter impresses..
