2026 Tax Deadline: Does Your State Have an IRS Disaster Extension?

Calendar with thumbtacks on various dates.

If you live in a federally declared disaster area, your April 15 deadline may have already been moved to May 1, 2026.

Each year, the IRS extends tax deadlines for taxpayers in designated areas impacted by severe storms and natural disasters.

The IRS announces these tax deadline extensions for various states as disasters occur. But just because your federal income tax deadline has changed doesn't mean your state tax agency has also shifted the date for when your taxes are due.

Here's a list of states with IRS tax deadline extensions for federal income tax returns and other details you need to know if you live or have a business in an impacted area.

Note: This list contains many of the states with tax deadline extensions. However, the IRS frequently adds new states, so if you don't see your state listed here, please refer to the IRS official disaster relief website for the most up-to-date listing of states with extensions.

Which states have an extended tax deadline for disaster areas?

  • The extended tax deadline for each state below might only apply to certain counties or parishes.
  • The IRS will automatically grant tax deadline extensions for taxpayers who live or have businesses in those areas.
  • However, other taxpayers may qualify for relief (for example, if you had records in the affected areas), you can contact the IRS at 866-562-5227 for guidance.

Generally, the start date of a qualified storm or other natural disaster is the beginning of the period of tax relief. For instance, if a federally declared disaster starts on Dec. 10, the IRS may extend tax relief from Dec. 10 to the new, extended deadline.

However, that's not always the case. For that reason, you'll want to check the individual IRS announcement for specifics on how your tax situation might be affected:

What income tax due dates are extended for states in disaster areas?

While IRS tax deadlines are extended for the above areas, not every federal due date is extended. The following table identifies which specific filings — from individual income to excise taxes — qualify for the 2026 tax deadline relief.

State Tax Extensions in 2026

State

Tax Deadlines Extended

Alaska

Individual income tax returns (including payments), 2025 contributions to IRAs and HSAs, estimated tax payments due between Jan 15 and April 15, certain payments and tax returns for payroll related to excise taxes.

Montana

Individual income tax returns (including payments), 2025 contributions to IRAs and HSAs, estimated tax payments due between Jan 15 and April 15, certain payments and tax returns for payroll related to excise taxes.

Tennessee

Individual income tax returns (including payments), estimated tax payments due between Jan 15 and April 15, certain payments and tax returns for payroll related to excise taxes.

Washington

Individual income tax returns (including payments), 2025 contributions to IRAs and HSAs, estimated tax payments due between Jan 15 and April 15, certain payments and tax returns for payroll related to excise taxes.

You may have noticed: The 2025 health savings account (HSA) contribution deadline is April 15, 2026, the same date federal tax returns are due. However, qualifying taxpayers granted federal tax extensions due to severe storms have an extended HSA contribution deadline.

As a result, taxpayers granted relief can make prior-year HSA contributions until the date their federal tax returns are due.

State income tax extensions

Sometimes, a state's Division of Taxation or revenue agency extends state tax return due dates when the IRS issues tax relief.

Taxpayers with a residence or a business in the above-affected areas may qualify for income tax extensions with their state's Department of Revenue. Check your local jurisdiction's website for the most up-to-date information.
