Texas Gov. Greg Abbott announced Wednesday the Department of Public Safety will be a law enforcement presence throughout the Uvalde Consolidated Independent School District in the upcoming school year.
The DPS security presence of more than 30 state police officers was requested by Uvalde CISD Superintendent Hal Harrell, Abbott said in a news release. The 2022-23 school year will begin Sept. 6.
The announcement comes less than a month after a Texas House committee report revealed DPS made up 91 of the 376 law enforcement officers who responded to the May 24 shooting that killed 19 children and two teachers at Robb Elementary School.
