State of play with Leeds United's Elland Road expansion plans detailed

Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani has given an update on his long-term plans to expand Elland Road. Radrizzani bought the stadium back from Jacob Adler’s company Teak Commercial Limited for £20m, using his own company Greenfield Investment Pte Ltd in June 2017.

In an interview with The Athletic, the Italian said that progress is being made on the plans that Leeds originally mapped out following promotion back to the Premier League.

“I always said to Angus Kinnear, we’ll look at the expansion of the stadium when we’re in the third year of the Premier League,” he said. “The chance to go back in the Championship is very high in the first and second year but much lower after.

“Now we can move on. Angus has initiated some activities to finance the project. It will be over £100million to renovate the West Stand and build it to a 55,000 capacity. We’re going step by step but, hopefully, we move soon with a financial partner.”

Radrizzani added that expanding Elland Road would propel Leeds to the ‘top eight to 10’ in England in terms of revenue as he

“We need to be supportive financially and we need to structure the team and the club differently. This is also linked to the development of the stadium, which is another important area of growth,” Radrizzani said.

He added: “Our club now is around £205-£2010m in revenue. If we develop the stadium to 55,000 attendance we could probably reach £260-£270m which will put us in the top eight to 10 in the league in terms of revenue.

“We have the infrastructure, the city and the fans to make this club in the top 10. We need to work to maintain and have a steady growth, step-by-step, to be a sustainable and healthy club.”

Elland Road currently boasts a capacity of 37,792 and has been home to Leeds since their foundation in 1919.
