'Start dreaming of Madrid' - The national media verdict on Newcastle United's 4-1 win over Everton

A round-up of what the national media are reporting after Newcastle United's 4-1 win over Everton at Goodison Park last night.

'Howe shuffled the pack'

"Unlike the swift destruction of Tottenham at St James’ Park, Newcastle had to bide their time before delivering another incisive exhibition at Goodison Park," Andy Hunter wrote for the Guardian.

"A seventh win in eight outings could have equalled Sunday’s scoreline but for the interventions of Jordan Pickford and VAR. Everton’s strong start was a distant memory by the time Callum Wilson, Joelinton and Alexander Isak were swatting aside the home defence with ease and exposing the chasm in quality between the respective forward lines.

"Wilson struck twice, Joelinton once and Jacob Murphy was also on the scoresheet following a mesmerising run from fellow substitute Isak that took him beyond four blue shirts.

"Howe shuffled his pack from Sunday but Newcastle’s penetration and winning mentally remained unchanged, victory taking them eight points clear of fifth-placed Spurs with a game in hand."

'Dream of Madrid and Munich'

"Newcastle’s St James’ Park felt like Goodison once," Chris Bascombe wrote for the Telegraph. "They are cruising towards the promised land of Champions League football these days having seemingly read the Farhad Moshiri blueprint of what to do with a football club and astutely done the complete opposite.

"The vastly different trajectories of two clubs with much in common historically serves as a warning to all those who lure monied owners. One is an example of how to maximise the benefit of new investment, the other of how catastrophic it can get when cash is brainlessly squandered.

"Newcastle’s guile came to the fore as Joelinton, Wilson and Jacob Murphy gave the scoreline the deserved polish, despite Dwight McNeil scrambling a home consolation.

"Howe’s side has the character to go with the ability to preserve their top four spot. They can start dreaming of Madrid and Munich having struck ten goals in two gloriously accomplished victories.

"Everton must prepare themselves for next season’s likely trips to Preston and Rotherham."

'Nobody can catch them'

"Sean Dyche summed it up perfectly afterwards: "Newcastle are free-rolling. They're flying." An aggregate score line of 10-2 across their two matches this week has the fans licking their lips at the prospect of Champions League football next season. And I don't see anyone stopping them," Keith Downie wrote for Sky Sports.

"This is as free as they've played all season; their subs are making the team stronger; and there's a healthy competition coursing through the squad. Here, they stuck with a physical Everton in the first half, frustrated them, nicked one on the break, then blew them away second half.

"They have so many players at the top of their game and so many players scoring or assisting. It must be a delight for Eddie Howe to oversee; he says his attackers are breathing down each others necks. Poor Everton couldn't live with them. Like Sunday, you could pick four or five different man of the matches.

"Tonight felt like a final Premier League hurrah for Everton - they'll do well to recover from this. For Newcastle - Sunday can't come soon enough. Their travelling fans are loving every minute. But they'll be loving it even more in Europe's hot-spots next season.

"Nobody is catching Newcastle in this form."
