The relationship between humans, nature and the cosmos is celebrated in a major exhibition opening at Sydney's premier art gallery.
Angelica Mesiti: The Rites of When features dance, musical composition and aerial drone views to celebrate the winter and summer solstices.
Set inside a World War II oil tank at the Art Gallery of NSW, the exhibition is the Sydney-born artist's first solo presentation at the venue.
It includes seven "monumental" video screens showing a film composed of two movements, celebrating the two solstices and acknowledging the rituals and knowledge drawn from the stars.
Creating work specifically designed for the space had created many of its most brilliant exhibitions, gallery director Michael Brand said.
"Ms Mesiti's video practice has long observed the intricacies of human behaviour, utilising choreography and performance with an increasing attention to the natural world," he said.
"Her interpretation of our globalised existence is a reminder that in times of permanent crisis, culture and community matter deeply."
