Donald Trump’s administration has met with campaigners opposed to Sir Keir Starmer’s Chagos deal amid growing fears that the US president will veto plans to hand the islands over to Mauritius.
The prime minister has insisted that the president signed off on the plan to transfer the islands’ sovereignty, which houses the crucial US-UK Diego Garcia airbase, after the agreement had been cleared by American intelligence agencies.
