Going to Starbucks (SBUX) is typically a pleasant experience for most (unless you end up in the morning coffee line in the drive-up, that is).
But for many folks that used a QR code in the Starbucks app for a free 200 star bonus this week, they got a rude surprise when they found their star balance negative in the Starbucks app not long after.

The QR code in question was floating around social media during the week and just seemed like a good way to add 200 stars to customers' Starbucks Rewards accounts.
On April 24, Starbucks posted a statement in the app addressing the issue which read: "On Saturday, April 22, a QR code for bonus Stars given to attendees at an in-person event spread online, going beyond the intended audience. The stars redeemed through this code have been removed from ineligible accounts. We apologize for the inconvenience."
Several Reddit users claimed to have called or emailed customer service and gotten the stars back, but many were so angry they said the situation was enough to make them stop going to the coffee retailer.
