Star Wars' Obi-Wan Kenobi release date confirmed as Ewan McGregor returns

In news which will delight Star Wars fans, Obi-Wan Kenobi is winging its way to screens.

The eagerly-awaited series which sees Ewan McGregor, 50, reprise his role as the Jedi Master makes its debut on Disney + on May 25.

That date is not insignificant as it was on that day in 1977 the first Star Wars movie, A New Hope, debuted in cinemas.

The new story takes place 10 years after the final Star Wars prequel movie, 2005's Revenge of the Sith, in which Obi-Wan failed to bring his pal and apprentice Annakin Skywalker back from the Dark Side.

Hayden Christensen, 40, will be joining Ewan as he reprises his role as the Force-sensitive character.

The Trainspotting actor previously revealed that his portrayal of Obi-Wan in the new series was inspired by the late actor Sir Alec Guinness' take on the Jedi Master in the original trilogy of 'Star Wars' movies.

He said: "I am a huge fan and had a great time studying him through his early films. It is a fun thing to try and imagine him as a young guy.

"I am getting much closer in age to him so it will be my challenge to try and meet him somewhere."

Zero Dark Thirty star Joel Edgerton and Bonnie Piesse will return as Owen Lars and Beru Lars - Luke Skywalker's uncle and aunt in the series, which is being directed by Deborah Chow.

Little is known about the show's plot, but viewers could be treated to a repeat of Obi-Wan and Annakin's storming lightsaber duel at the end of Revenge of the Sith.

Obi-Wan Kenobi will be the third live-action Star Wars series debuting on Disney Plus, following The Mandalorian and The Book of Boba Fett, with many more said to be in the offing.
