Star Wars: Crews spotted in West Country quarry to film scenes for second Disney+ series

Film crews have been spotted in a West Country quarry to film the latest series of a Star Wars spin-off. Production for the second series of Star Wars: Andor, which takes place before the events of Rogue One and focuses on the early formation of the Rebellion, is underway and some scenes will be shot in Dorset.

Dorset Live reports the series was renewed and therefore filming has returned. Disney+ Film crews were seen lugging around their heavy equipment at the picturesque Winspit Quarry, near Worth Matravers, ahead of a second stint of filming later this month.

The West Country beauty spot served as Saw Gerrera's headquarters and was featured in the eighth episode in the sci-fi series. The scene at Segra Milo Partisan base, which uses a bit of CGI trickery, saw rebel Stellan Skarsgard's Luthen Rael meet with Partisan leader Saw Gerrera inside the base to discuss a potential mission.

Swanage News reports crews have started setting up the base for the production team and actors in a field at Acton, near Langton Matravers. They set up base in a similar location between April and May 2021, when dozens of crews and actors at the beauty spot.

Signs in the area say the west side of Winspit Quarry will be closed off for filming from April 12 until April 29. Winspit Quarry in the Purbecks was closed for several weeks in April and May 2021 to allow production crews to build the set, as well as transport props, technical equipment and for actors to arrive.

Three days of filming started on May 11, 2021 with filming centring around a cave at the quarry, with lights and equipment pointed towards it. Creature effects crews were spotted at the disused quarry while mysterious actors wearing black cloaks were also seen.

Spectators could only see above the quarry and a rock wall blocked the entry of the cave so people had difficulty seeing what was being filmed. Security guards also lined the public footpaths to prevent any photographs or videos from being taken.

It is open throughout the year for tourists and residents to visit and boasts of a scenic walk with stunning views of the Dorset countryside and coast. Created by Tony Gilroy, the series focuses on the rise of the Empire and thief Cassian Andor who becomes a revolutionary and joins the rebellion.

Diego Luna, reprises the role of rebel spy Cassian Andor and Genevieve O’Reilly, returned as Mon Mothma, as well as Stellan Skarsgard, Denise Gough, and Kyle Soller. Andor is expected to be released next summer.
