Star Trek’s newest game is a psychological horror title starring The Next Generation’s Ro Laren

A new psychological horror-driven Star Trek game is coming soon from developer Bloober Team, famous for critically acclaimed games Cronos: The New Dawn and the Silent Hill 2 remake.

Titled Star Trek: Shadow Frontier, the single-player game will follow Ro Laren, a Bajoran character famous for her appearances on Star Trek: The Next Generation as she navigates a hostile planet with a consciousness of its own. Fans will be thrilled to know Ro Laren will be played by her original actress, Michelle Forbes.

Star Trek: Shadow Frontier trailer announcement

Shadow Frontier is a psychologically driven story set in the Star Trek universe, following Ro Laren after her ship crashes on “a distant planet overtaken by a strange consciousness” where multiple other ships have met a similar fate. The trailer shows Ro Laren running through the dark corridors of a ship filled with organic alien matter – as well as a few Easter eggs like a baseball (Captain Sisko’s favorite sport) and a glass similar to those used by Captain Picard for his Earl Grey tea, hot.

The trailer includes a voiceover from an unknown character who (presumably through a log) describes that he feels his mind slipping and that it’s too late for him, urging Ro Laren to let him go. Given her well-known stubborn nature, this is a request she immediately ignores.

The game’s description describes how Ro Laren will be “pulled into a corrupted labyrinth where her memories twist and the planet threatens to sever her connection to reality”. Given her Bajoran heritage, these memories are likely to relate to the traumatic occupation of her home planet and subsequent war with the Cardassians – a subject heavily covered in The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine.

While the game will be atmospherically horror, iconic Star Trek tools like phasers and tricorders will also be available to fend off enemies and solve puzzles.

There’s no release date for Star Trek: Shadow Frontier right now, though the Bloober Team’s Head of Publishing, Michal Gembicki, did mention 2027 as a release window, so fans should expect a bit of a wait before they can go boldly into the horror genre.

As for platforms, the game will be available on Steam, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.
